February 3, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLUMBUS, OH – Discover exciting, out-of-the-way places in the Lake Erie region at the Friends of Stone Laboratory and Ohio Sea Grant 11th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction, to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. February 18, 2009, at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road on the Ohio State University campus.

Melinda Huntley, OSG Tourism Program Director, will present “You Thought You Knew Lake Erie,” an exploration of the Lake Erie area maritime museums, Underground Railroad sites, shipwrecks, and other interesting venues often unknown to the public.

The Silent Auction will begin at 7 p.m. and continue throughout the program. Among the available items for bid are tickets to next season’s Buckeye football game against Navy; an annual membership to the Columbus Museum of Art; tickets to the Kirtland Vintage Ohio Wine Festival; and gift certificates to The Refectory and Cameron Mitchell Restaurants. A catalogue of all available items can be found at stonelab.osu.edu/events/winter-program.

All funds raised will benefit the programs and scholarships of Stone Laboratory, the nation’s oldest freshwater biological field station, located at Put-in-Bay on Gibraltar Island, OSU’s island campus on Lake Erie. Payment will only be accepted by cash or check.

“This fun and informative event is a great place for people to learn about our courses and research, how to join the Friends of Stone Lab, or simply get your Lake Erie questions answered by the experts,” said Dr. Jeff Reutter, Director of Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab.

Information will be available regarding Stone Lab courses, as well as field trip opportunities for students in grades 4-12 and adults. Stone Lab merchandise will also be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting Stone Lab scholarships.

Individuals wishing to donate items for auction or RSVP should contact Nancy Cruickshank at 614.292.8949 or by e-mail at cruickshank.3@osu.edu.

The Friends of Stone Laboratory is a non-profit group that works to support the operation and missions of the Lab.
