GLIN==> Urge President Obama and Prime Minister Harper to Revitalize the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement

Great Lakes United: Action Alert
Urge President Obama and Prime Minister Harper
to Revitalize the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement
In a few days, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be meeting in Ottawa to discuss topics of deep concern to the United States and Canada. As they discuss the economic challenges of our nations, the future of the Great Lakes is centrally important. Protection and restoration of these waters benefits numerous economic drivers for both countries.

Please sign on to a joint letter asking that the President and the Prime Minister commit to revitalizing the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

Individuals are are asked to send a similar message to the President and Prime Minister through www.speakongreatlakes.org.

We need to reinvigorate efforts to safeguard this resource at a time when the Great Lakes are beleaguered by invasive species, old pollution languishing in harbor bottoms, new chemical pollution, habitat loss, the return of dead zones, impacts of climate change, and other threats.  Such threats limit the economic potential of the region, which is of fundamental importance to employment and wealth generation for both nations.

The letter and a backgrounder can be found here. To add your name and organization to the list, contact:

If this turn around is too tight, a follow up letter will be sent in the coming days that you are invited to join. However, we urge you to sign on as quickly as possibly so that our initial letter can be as strong as possible.

We encourage your to tell your members and supporters to visit speakongreatlakes.org and participate.

After you have signed on to the letter and sent your message, you are encouraged to contact your Senator, Representative, or Member of Parliament and tell them how important the Great Lakes are to you, and to send that same message to President Obama and Prime Minister Harper.

A thriving Great Lakes system nurtures our shared economy and enhances our nations’ cooperative relationships. A revitalized Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement will provide a new framework and platform to help achieve our shared goals. Thank you for your support. Through cooperation and resolve we can make a difference for the Great Lakes and our shared future.
