[b-span] B-SPAN, the World Bank's webcasting station for development, newsletterJune, 2002
Greetings from B-SPAN, the World Bank's webcasting station on development
issues. Among the recent additions to B-SPAN are the following:
The Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) is one of
the important yearly gatherings of experts and policymakers to assess
new trends and knowledge in the field of development. Among the
speakers at this year's ABCDE: Bank President James Wolfensohn spoke
about the institution's agenda in the aftermath of the development
summit in Monterrey; U.S. Treasury Undersecretary for International
Affairs John Taylor outlined the Bush Administration's economic
development agenda; Bank Chief Economist Nicholas Stern addressed what
steps the Bank needed to take to achieve its Millennium Development
Goals; IMF First Managing Director Anne Krueger discussed the impact of
trade policy on poverty reduction; and Bank Research Director Paul
Collier assessed the difficulties of development in Africa.

Rapid urbanization, the boom of local governments, increasing requests
from cities for advice and financial help from international development
institutions, and the expanding urban policy agenda of the World Bank
were among the topics discussed during the Urban Forum 2002. Jane
Jacobs, one of the world's leading urban planners, discussed the
importance of investing in urban areas of developing countries. John
F.C. Turner, a pioneer in housing and community empowerment, spoke about
his personal observation of squatter settlements in Peru and the need to
provide tools and incentives for community regeneration in the
developing world. Enrique Penalosa, former Mayor of Bogota, Colombia,
discussed the impact of transport on urban development. Greg Clark,
executive director of the London Development Agency, spoke of lessons
learned in the industrialized world that could impact the urban
landscape in the developing world. In addition, a number of leading
thinkers from the Bank on urban, infrastructure and private sector
development also participated in the Forum including Frannie Leautier,
John Flora, Nemat Shafik, and David Ellerman.

More than 40 leading economists and academics from the Bank, IMF, IDB,
Federal Reserve Bank and universities gathered for a conference on
Financial Globalization: A Blessing or a Curse? Participants discussed:
global banking; booms and busts in financial markets; the interaction
between globalization, institutions, macroeconomics, and politics;
financial globalization and growth; and the consequences of
globalization on capital markets. Highlights include: a discussion with
former Deputy Managing Director of the IMF Stanley Fischer, Harvard
economist Jeffrey Frankel and IMF Director of Research Ken Rogoff on the
benefits and costs of financial globalization; a presentation by
University of Chicago economist Luigi Zingales on the history of
financial development in the 20th century; and a session by MIT
economist Simon Johnson on the institutional factors behind what makes
economies grow.

IMPORTANT: B-SPAN makes use of RealPlayer 8 Basic, a free software package
that allows you to view video materials through the Internet. For
step-by-step instructions on how to find and download Real Player 8 Basic,
visit http://www.worldbank.org/wbi/B-SPAN/realplayer.htm. To download Real
Player 8 Basic, visit http://www.real.com.
Bank staff, please note that the Bank upgraded its network in the summer of
2001 to run the latest free version of RealPlayer. RealPlayer should load
automatically for staff using the Bank network. However, even if the
latest version of RealPlayer software is loaded on your hard drive, some
staff may still experience difficulty watching B-SPAN videos. This may be
because the pre-existing version of RealPlayer supersedes the newly
installed version. In such a case, you will need to de-install the old
version of RealPlayer before installing the updated version. If you
continue to experience difficulties, please consult your IT staff or
contact ISG.
Did you know you can stop and restart the RealPlayer when playing a B-SPAN
tape by pressing the Control and P buttons on your keyboard simultaneously.
This allows you to pause the video and restart it from the point you
stopped without having to download it from the beginning. If you have
other interesting tips about how to use RealPlayer, please let us know and
we'll be glad to pass them along to the B-SPAN community.
If you would like to receive B-SPAN updates or have them sent to interested
colleagues, you may email join-b-span@worldbank.org or visit
http://www.worldbank.org/wbi/B-SPAN/bspan_newsletter.htm. We welcome your
questions and comments. Please feel free to share them by writing David
Shaman at dshaman@worldbank.org. Best wishes.
