State Parks P2 Initiative

NPPR P2 pros,

Thanks everyone for the fantastic response to our inquiry about whether
anyone had a P2 State Parks initiative in place. We had over 25
responses! Since several of you asked for us to share what we got,
below is a summary of what we are considering here in Michigan and a
summary of the responses and resources we found. I hope this is helpful
to those of you considering getting this type of program underway. As
for our project, its currently on hold but if we do get it off the
ground we will be sure to post additional info. on our website at
www.Michigan.gov/deq . If you have any questions about P2 in Parks
in Michigan, please contact Karen Edlin at edlink@michigan.gov

Wendy

—--The Pollution Prevention (P2) Section of the Michigan Department
of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) offers a variety of programs and
services to encourage businesses, institutions, and government agencies
to pursue P2. In the near future we hope to partner with our state
parks to promote greening of Michigan's state parks through education
and outreach activities and by development of a guidance document. This
document will provide detailed P2 information on waste management,
energy efficiency, water conservation, environmentally preferred
purchasing, green buildings, and environmental management systems; with
additional informational items such as self-assessment worksheets, a
native plants list, a site evaluation checklist, and case studies. The
document will also provide information on best management practices for
known environmental risks, such as pesticide handling/application and
fuel storage.

Please see the attached document for a list of responses that were
received from the parks inquiry posted on the list serve. The attached
document also provides information on additional parks P2 resources that
I have come across in my limited research.
