I just wanted to pass this information on to the P2 community from Sharon
Baxter, regarding some recent changes to Virginia's DEQ Office of P2. Due
to the terrible state of the budget in Virginia, as of November 1, the
Office of Pollution Prevention suffered a serious setback losing numerous
staff. The office will now only consist of three people. The other staff
in Richmond and in the regional offices has been assigned to other program
areas. They are in the process of determining what will have to change in
terms of program services.
This is a sad development. The Governor of Virginia, Mark Warner, actually
used his recent public address on the budget to publicly comment that
pollution prevention was one area that was going to be cut, even though he
did not think it was a wise thing to do in the longterm. I would be
interested in experiences in other states, since budget woes are fairly
prevalent across the country. I would also be interested in updates on any
states that are increasing funds for P2 or incorporating creative ways to
raise money for these types of efforts.
