Position Title: Environmental Specialist
Job Vacancy Number: 542-0167
Salary Range: $32,177.60 to $48,297.60 annually
Location: Des Moines
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Energy and Waste Management Bureau, has an Environmental Specialist vacancy within Pollution Prevention (P2) Services. P2 Services is a non-regulatory technical assistance service offered to businesses, industries and public institutions. Job responsibilities include coordinating and conducting on-site technical assistance to help organizations improve their environmental performance and reduce their environmental risk through effective planning and management control. Travel is required for this position.
Duties include:
· Working with a team to develop an assistance delivery strategy, which prioritizes facilities to target, suggests staff assignments and other resource needs.
· Reviewing organizations' existing policies, plans and management systems to identify how environmental issues are addressed, and offer suggestions to enhance the quality of such plans and systems.
· Reviewing organizations' processes and services to identify and determine significance of environmental aspects/impacts within processes, work practices, products and services; and identify opportunities to improve organizations' environmental performance and reduce their environmental risk using pollution prevention technologies and practices.
· Working with organizations to determine the feasibility of pollution prevention opportunities by helping them quantify potential environmental and economic benefits as well as payback or return on investment for any capital expenditure. Assist organizations develop an action plan to implement feasible opportunities.
· Advising pollution prevention interns, placed through the P2 Intern Program, by providing guidance on project management, approaches and methodologies used and analytical tools available. Also, critique draft products and recommendations, and work with host company supervisors to ensure projects are kept on schedule.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in natural science, with demonstrable education and/or experience in environmental health or science. Preference will be given to persons with professional experience in pollution prevention, environmental management, lean manufacturing, and/or quality control/management.
ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
· Ability to understand environmental regulations, pollution prevention and environmental management system concepts, and apply those concepts in business situations.
· Ability to understand business operations and manufacturing processes.
· Ability to evaluate technical and economic feasibility of pollution prevention opportunities.
· Ability to prepare accurate reports, tables, charts and graphs for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
· Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully, both orally and in writing with customers, regulatory officials, and co-workers regarding technical and administrative matters.
