RE: Recycling ideas for perchloroethylene?



Bill/Todd,

Perc may not be regulated as an ozone depleting compound, and it has
recently been delisted as a VOC, but it most definitely is still a HAP.  As
for switching to an aqueous cleaner, did the shop contact the supplier of
the dye penetrant for their recommendation ?  Did they contact other dye
penetrant suppliers ?  The USAF has switched to high pressure power washers
and small hand-held steam cleaners for much of their inspection work.  

You mentioned that they looked at dry solvent (I assume you mean dry dye
penetrate  inspection) but were put off by the cost $3,500.  Is this for
real ?  This shop is either on the verge of bankrupcy or they just don't
care.  A well designed off-the-shelf recycling system will cost at least
this much.  More if you account for engineering, procurement, installation,
training, start-up, and maintenance.  Forget CO2, way too expensive.

Another post mentioned NESHAP compliance for the degreaser.  Excellent
point.  This could be a major cost driver for getting rid of the degreaser.
Be sure the shop figures out what their compliance cost will be for keeping
the Perc degreaser before they shoot down any capital outlay for the dry
inspection or aqueous cleaning method.
