I am trying to update my compilation of pollution prevention case studies
and strategy checklists that are directly applicable to the Chemical Process
Industries (chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc). I am
particularly interested in collections of case studies which emphasize
successful P2 implementation in chemical manufacturing facilities. I hope
to include this information in a lecture I will be giving at the AIChE P2
workshop in Houston next month (www.seattle.battelle.org/aiche98/). I will
also include the compiled information in an article on the ChemAlliance web
site (www.chemalliance.org) which should be available by mid-February.
A couple of notes:
(1) I am interested in both new and old case studies. My main concern is to
compile a list of what has been shown to work, in hopes of using these to
illustrate underlying "larger truths" (including design strategies and
overall problem solving techniques) about P2 in this industry.
(2) I am limiting my inquiry to examples from the chemical process
industries and operations common to the industry.
(3) To help avoid redundancy, I am already familiar with the following:
Univ. Texas El-Paso Case Study Collection
Envirosense's Commercial Case Study Collection
Chemical Online Case Studies (primarily product press
releases; not limited to P2 case studies)
CMA Profiles in Prevention: Case Histories of Pollution
Prevention in the Chemical Industry
(not available online -- order info at:
P2 Case Study/checklist information embedded in the EPA-OECA
Sector Notebooks for Organic, Inorganic, Pharma, refining sectors:
(4) Finally, a pre-emptory message: I've deliberately stayed out of the
recent P2TECH debate over "type A" and "type B" P2 philosophies (e.g.,
prescription-oriented vs. process-oriented, for lack of a more nuanced
characterization of the debate). That's perhaps because I am a type "Z"
personality (I don't know what that means, it just sounds good). It's my
sincere hope that merely asking for references to checklists and case
studies will not inadvertently spark a renewed debate on the issue. I'm
just trying to fill a need expressed by our users.
Thanks in advance....
