Bag filter canisters are commonly used for removed the phosphate sludes.  They
are generally in-line arrangements and I believe , on the pressure side of  the
pump.  Around 40 microns should do it.

I don't recall seeing any inside the tank filters, however, other external
devices (centrifugal/ overflow filters, etc.) are common.
