1) OSHA Releases PPE Survey
The results of OSHA’s nationwide telephone survey of employers about personal
protective equipment reveal that over 90% of all employers pay for the full

cost of personal protective equipment (PPE) in seven out of eight categories,
excluding foot protection. The survey also found that some type of PPE is used
in over 60% of facilities in the industries covered by the survey. The results
of the survey are available for review and comment in the agency’s Docket
Office.

2) Title Protection is Law in Texas
Texas Governor George W. Bush signed into law legislation protecting the
titles
of certified industrial hygienists (CIHs) and industrial hygienists in
training
(IHITs). Title protection establishes legal recognition for the profession by
defining titles and definitions used by the profession. As a result of the new
law, only occupational and environmental health and safety professionals who
meet the specified criteria may use the titles CIH or IHIT.

3) Committee Wants to Delay Ergonomics Standard
The House Committee on Education and the Workforce last week voted to require
OSHA to delay publication of its ergonomics standard. The committee wants to
wait for the results of a second National Academy of Sciences literature
review
expected sometime in 2001. The bill, known as the “Workplace Preservation Act”
(H.R. 987), will now go to the full House for a vote.
