Here's a thought in response to your question about spray painting
equipment cleanup.

A painter can minimize the amounts of whatever solvent that he or she
purchases for gun cleaning by using special zip-lock bag inserts in the
paint cup.  

These cup inserts can reduce gun cleaning solvent use by 75% or so. 
This is because the largest area to be contaminated during gun use is
the paint cup.

The major gun manufacturers offer inserts at minimal cost.  Ordinary
zip-lock bags from the grogery store are similar, but won't work.
