Re: packing peanuts

Tammy,

Starch-based packing peanuts will add an additional load to wastewater
treatment plants in the form of BOD (biological oxygen demand). For an
individual consumer this disposal method might be acceptable, but for an
industry that might dispose of significant quantities of the material, it
should not be recommended. Composting is another alternative that works at
home and for industry.

The vendor I'm familiar with - American Excelsior - makes both the
popcorn/peanuts loose fill as well as sheet material. American Excelsior's
website - http://www.amerexcel.com/ - gives this phone number: 1-800-
326-3626 for more information.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone have a list of vendors for the new starch-based packing peanuts
and do you know if these peanuts, when dissolved down the drain, cause any
additional loading on the wastewater?
