RE: Substitutes for TCE in Stainless Steel Piping

Debby--

I have no idea as to the cost structure of your client or the cost of the following alternatives but I've heard that a number of non- or less-hazardous materials--hydrofluoroethers (HFEs)--are used for precision cleaning (e.g., medical devices, electronics, bearings, O2 lines).

Among the products: HFE-7100, HFE-7200 and HFE-71IPA (HFE + isopropanol but nonflammable, maybe cheaper than plain HFE) made by 3M (don't know if there are competitors).

Claimed to be non-ODC, nonflammable, low/no toxicity, "non VOC". Used solvent can be recovered and redistilled (which would save some cost). Can be used as a co-solvent with other products (may also save cost--reducing the IPA flammability problem is also a plus).

Again, I'm not sure if this potentially fit the bill but it may be of interest.

	Debby,

NMP does appear to work as a TCE substitute for many applications. But the problem with n-methyl pyrrolidone is that the toxicological effects haven't really been studied thoroughly, though it's a known developmental toxin. And IPA is, of course, a fire hazard (a class two fire hazard, I believe).

California EPA (Sacramento) has added the industrial solvent N-methylpyrrolidone to the list of chemicals that require warning labels under state's Proposition 65 rule. NPM is used to clean components in the electronics industry and machine parts.
