Re: Substitutes for TCE in Stainless Steel Piping

Debby:

We did a similar analysis for a client that uses TCE to degrease heat exchangers -- long circuitous tubes that are hard to clean using aqueous cleaners.  We were looking for a material that was not a HAP or a fire hazard.

We ultimately recommended an enclosed vacuum degreaser system (there are several  manufacturers).  The airless systems reduce solvent use and emissions by ~ 97% and hazardous waste generation by ~50%.  The degreasing solvent is usually perc or TCE.  (see manufacturers below).

The problem with NMP is that it has a high boiling point and requires a special still to distill it.  We also looked at a few other solvents, but they are either very expensive or their toxicity has not been fully evaluated (see below).

Replacement Solvent     Cost/lb Comments
HFE7100 (3 M product)   18.23           Fairly low toxicity
n-propyl bromide                3.60            EPA review incomplete; has toxicity issues;
                                                exposure thresholds similar to TCE; right
                                                now not a HAP nor on TRI but could be listed in the future.
DuPont Vertrel®         14.25           Toxicity less than trichloroethylene but not insignificant
