Art dept. solvent cleanup improvements

I would like information on your experience with higher ed art departments
that have successfully moved away from traditional toll arrangement solvent
cleaning for various artist materials and media (brushes, air brush guns,
etc used with acrylics, oils, lacquers, etc). Were petroleum substitutions
(aqueous, soy, terpenes, or other) made? Or was equipment or process
modification (like distillation) the focus? Or both?

Thanks for any insights.
