enviro friendly packaging

Dear P2techers,
Can anyone help me with a solution to a packaging quest.
Another business assistance center in our state is working with
a client to promote their product from the "enviro friendly"
perspective. The product is a portable flame thrower used to
spot kill weeds and woody perennials without the use of
herbicides. They currently shrink-wrap the product (see
demensions and weight below) on a printed cardboard backing.
They would like to explore a new packaging system using a
"clamshell, water-clear, biodegradable plastic" that would hold
the unit and it's accessories. My experience with packaging is
nil..but my first thought is their existing packaging is probably
better than the new idea. However, if anyone has any
experience with "biodegrable" plastic of the type described
above I would like to hear about it.
product specifics:
The cardboard backing dimensions on their current packaging
= 12" x 36".
Overall package is up to 3" thick, depending on the particular
torch.
Torches themselves weigh 4 - 5 lbs, depending on model.
Proposed clear plastic clamshell would be about the same size,
probably
hinged at the side.

Thanks,
