RE: Recognition awards

Because it is always possible for news to emerge about some bad thing
the company did, make sure your language is specific about what you are
commending them for. Then if something happens you can accurately say
that's that, and this is this. You may wish to commend the activity or
commitment, as distinct from endorsing the company.

If you don't do this and something comes out and the Commissioners are
embarassed, they may hesitate to provide such recognitions again. And
they may want to blame someone for not having checked the company out
thoroughly enough. But if you are specific about what you are
recognizing, there is no presumption that you are giving them a complete
clean bill of health, or a blanket blessing that can be interpreted as
"these folks have never done anything wrong", which of course would
require a careful background check.

Subject: Recognition awards

I am currently developing a recognition award for the top three
businesses in our County who have made a commitment above and beyond
compliance to prevent pollution. I want to have plaques that our
Commissioners present. Does anyone have suggestions on verbage from
plaques you have provided to businesses that we may be able to utilize?
