RE: acetone distillation gun-washer unit

There is a similar case study with MEK at:

I know this is a practice that many people in workshops and on the phone
have adopted and never regretted. It has a 6 month turnaround.

There was another case from a similar industry that generated some
discussion with a few of my colleagues.

Basically they disposed of the buckets with resin rather than cleaning them.
Cleaning generated huge acetone/resin waste. Some say it is a media
transfer; trading bucket/gel for acetone waste. Others viewed it as
segregation; only dispose of the gel, not acetone and gel to save a few
dollars on buckets.

In the end we decided to let companies decide for themselves if the benefits
outweighed the impacts. The lesson to pass to the company is to see if
there is one thing that they are doing that accounts for a huge waste
stream.

Subject: acetone distillation gun-washer unit

Does anyone have any specific experience with a gun-washer, acetone
distillation combo unit?

The question comes from a company doing light RTM fiberglass manufacturing.
They have to provide some gel-coat touch up to parts as part of the
finishing process, they use paint guns to do it, and they currently just
rinse them out with acetone, spraying it into a bucket and ultimately
disposing of it as hazardous waste. Their sister plant (that makes the
boats) has a big acetone distillation unit, and they have been very careful
with it to assure they get a good product out of it, so the workers don't
revolt against the "bad acetone." Given that experience, the light RTM
plant wants to "do things right."

Any help will be appreciated!
