Excellent question.  Here in Illinois we did a study on that back in 
the 1980s and found that these was no correlation between facility 
size and type of reported solid or hazardous wastes generated within 
SICs, by number of employees, gross sales, etc.  One could calculate 
a mean but the ranges were huge.  Within a given SIC the types of 
activities conducted can vary widely from facility to facility.  So 
the variation was not just differences in efficiencies.   Maybe the 
situation has changed or somebody else has been able to make sense of 
the data - or they have better data.  I'm interested in seeing what 
others have to contribute to this issue.
