There are thousands of lithographic printers in the U.S., most of them small businesses. Emissions of cleanup solvents used to clean rollers and blankets are very high, much higher than emissions of the solvents used in the inks. Most of the cleanup solvents used in the industry are VOCs, and many of them are also toxic.

This presentation will focus on the results of projects that were conducted in the Los Angeles area over the last few years by the Institute for Research and Technical Assistance (IRTA), a nonprofit organization. In these projects, IRTA worked with 21 lithographic printing facilities to identify, develop, test and demonstrate low-VOC, low toxicity alternative cleanup materials. IRTA found and demonstrated water-based, acetone based and soy based cleaning alternatives that were effective. The South Coast Air Quality Management District adopted a VOC regulation that became effective January 1, 2008 based on the results of the IRTA projects.
