POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
SAILING VESSEL INLAND SEAS - 1999 SEASON
DECK HAND/INSTRUCTOR
The Inland Seas Education Association has an opening for a deck
hand/instructor aboard its
educational vessel Inland Seas. This is a seasonal position from June 10 to
October 22, 1999.
Inland Seas' mission is to provide hands-on environmental and heritage
education to youth and
adults with the goal of long term stewardship of the Great Lakes ecosystem.
ISEA classes are a
mix of half-day and overnight programs. The usual schedule will be five
days on, two days off.
Room & board are provided aboard the vessel.
DUTIES:
The deckhand will be involved in all facets of deck seamanship and
evolutions under sail, as well
as maintenance, safety and sanitation of the vessel. The deckhand will also
assist with teaching of
seamanship and aquatic ecology to students.
This position requires a combination of sailing, teaching and interpersonal
relations skills. The
ability to work as a team member, both with the other crew and the volunteer
teaching staff, is
paramount.
REQUIREMENTS:
First aid and CPR certificate. DOT drug free certification prior to
employment. Participation in
ISEA's drug testing program is a condition of employment.
COMPENSATION:
$300/week plus room and board on the vessel. A health insurance policy,
beginning July 1 and
ending October 31, 1999 will be provided by ISEA.

COOK
The Inland Seas Education Association has an opening for a seasonal cook
aboard its 77' schooner Inland Seas.
Inland Seas' mission is to provide hands-on environmental education to youth
and adults with the goal of long
term stewardship of the Great Lakes ecosystem. ISEA classes are a mix of
half-day and overnight programs
DUTIES:
* Planning and preparing meals for 5 to 45 persons.
* Purchasing needed food and galley supplies.
* Tracking food costs.
* Working with ship's crew on deck as needed.
* Assisting shipboard educational program by interacting with students and
being a positive role model.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Previous shipboard cooking experience.
* Current First Aid and CPR Certificate.
* Pre-employment drug test. Enrollment in ISEA drug testing program is a
requirement of employment.
* Valid driver's license
* Good physical conditon, not suseptable to sea sickness. Able to stand for
long periods of time.
* Able to work as a team member with the other crew, the volunteer teaching
staff and students.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Inland Seas has a large, well lit, well ventilated galley. There is a four
burner LPG stove with oven, large reefer
and freezer (w/ holding plates), commercial size sinks, and good stowage.
Volunteer adults or students are
usually available to help with meal preparation and clean up.
SCHEDULE:
This position begins JUNE 9 and ends OCTOBER 15, 1998. The average work
week is five days on, two
days off.
COMPENSATION:
$300.00/week plus room and board on the vessel. An HMO medical insurance
policy is included with
employment.
