Required Qualifications: Master's Degree in Marine
& Oceanographic Technologies or related discipline or in lieu of
degree, six years of directly related work experience. Demonstrated
purchasing, supervisory, budgeting and accounting experience is essential.
A minimum of five (5) years at-sea shipboard experience in coastal waters,
some portion of which must be in the capacity of vessel master/captain. A
research vessel captain must be able to appreciate what the science party
is attempting to achieve and the methods/equipment being used and be
capable of understanding the scientific and technical requirements of
various research activities conducted aboard ship. Experience as
master/captain is essential to prepare individual for assessing and
balancing the myriad factors that impinge on the safety of a vessel at
sea. A minimum of three (3) years experience in the operation,
maintenance, and repair of small boats and related equipment. A U.S. Coast
Guard vessel master’s ticket for a coastal vessel (100 tons minimum and be
eligible for 150 tons) licensed to carry passengers is essential for this
position to meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements and State liability
concerns. Formal training in first aid is essential. Standards for
Training, Certification and Watch Standing (STCW) and radar endorsements
are required. Preferred Qualifications: First-hand knowledge of Long
Island waters, New York Harbor, and the Hudson River is highly desirable.
Preferably, some or all of the incumbent’s prior at-sea experience will be
aboard an oceanographic research vessel.
