As you may know, I'll be giving a presentation on the history of Great
Lakes science vessels at the upcoming GLASS Business Session on
Wednesday evening as part of the January 23-26 Great Lakes Captain's
Association meeting in Traverse City.
I'm working on compiling information and am finding that historical
information on science vessel operations in the Great Lakes is going to
be a challenge.
Given that, I'd like to ask for your help in trying to get any
historical information on science vessels operating in the Great Lakes
since the late 1800's when the first Great Lakes research efforts
were starting up.
Useful information would include:
Name of vessel
vessel specs (a photo would be really valuable)
Who built it and where
Who or what agency/institution operated it and where and for how long.
Who crewed the vessel
Home port
What sort of research it supported and names/affiliation of scientists
conducting research
Detailed information on cruises such as logs, scientist's journals or
field notes, etc.
What happened to the vessel after it was decommissioned, etc.
At present, most of the info I have is mainly on U.S. vessels and I'd
really like to get any/all information on Canadian vessels to get a
complete story.
Please let me know if you have such information or suggestion on sources
I might consult to get it.
Thanks and hope to see you in Traverse City.
