Ecology Center Shortens Name
New Name Reflects Broad Mission and Regional Scope

At its annual membership meeting yesterday, the Ecology Center overwhelmingly approved a resolution to change the 30-year-old environmental organization's name from "Ecology Center of Ann Arbor" to "Ecology Center." The change reflects the organization's growth and broadened focus over the past decade.

During the past ten years, the Ecology Center has worked on land use issues throughout Washtenaw County, on solid waste and air quality issues throughout southeast Michigan, on toxics and pollution prevention projects throughout the state, and on nationwide auto manufacturing issues. The board of directors decided the name should be shortened to reflect the organization's broader regional scope.

The name change resolution was approved with over 90% of the vote. The board was quick to point out that the Ecology Center is not turning its back on local issues and programs in Ann Arbor. In the board's statement to members about the proposal, it noted that the Center had "actually increased the amount of work we do in Ann Arbor over the past five years. In the past year, among other things, we provided over 100 school programs in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, co-organized the campaign to enact a city parkland acquisition program, and worked with the University of Michigan Hospital to encourage use of an alternative to incineration of medical waste there." The organization will remain based in Ann Arbor.

The Ecology Center is a regional nonprofit organization which promotes a just and healthy environment through grassroots organizing, education, advocacy, and demonstration projects. The Center is also the parent organization of Recycle Ann Arbor.
