RE: SG-W:/ Newmarket, again!

My first job (@$1/hr) when I was 16 years old was working for
Webb Harwood on the farm that still exists, but which I understand
is going to be part of the Newmarket development. It's the house
and red barn on either side of US-12 just west of Platt Road. He
told me back then that he was not the type to move to Florida, and
that he would keep farming as long as he could. I know that he loved
that farm, and he did stay there until both he and his wife moved to
the Evangelical Home in Saline. I also know that he was offered a LOT
of money to sell in his later years. You can see his picture on
the wall of the Pittsfield Grange Hall. I can't say that during the one
summer that I worked for him, that he imparted
much intellecutally that I use today, but I'm sure he's at least
partly responsible for my involvement in land preservation today.

Christina - Please forward this to the smartgrowth list, since my
membership "lapsed" when I changed e-mail addresses.
Thanks.
