Ecology Center Meeting Features Former MDNR Deputy Director Don Inman on How Michigan's Environmental Agencies Abandoned Their Great Stewardship Tradition
Former Michigan Department of Natural Resources Deputy Director Don Inman will keynote the annual membership meeting of the Ecology Center, on Sunday, January 21, 2000, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Leopold Brothers Brewery, 523 S. Main St., in Ann Arbor. Dr. Inman will be speaking on "The Inside Story of How the State of Michigan's Top Environmental Agencies Abandoned Their Great Stewardship Tradition."
Don Inman was a 26-year employee with the MDNR until his resignation in 1997. He served in several top management positions, including Chief of the MDNR's Environmental Enforcement Division, Assistant Deputy Director, and, from 1993-97, as Deputy Director. He served under three governors and several Department Directors. Since leaving the Department in disillusionment, Dr. Inman and over 70 other former state environmental officials have created the Michigan Resource Stewards to watchdog natural resource and environmental protection issues in the state. He also serves on the board of directors of the Michigan Environmental Council.
The Ecology Center annual meeting also includes program reports, annual environmental awards, and election of the Center's Board of Directors. The meeting is open to the general public, and admission is free. For more information, please call (734) 761-3186 ext. 104.
The site of the meeting, Leopold Brothers Brewery, is "the world's first zero waste brewery." The operation converts brewing waste to fertilizer, captures carbon dioxide for greenhouse use, recovers steam for its kegging line, and uses all organic ingredients. The owners will offer tours of their facility after the annual meeting.
The Ecology Center is a regional nonprofit organization which promotes a just and healthy environment through grassroots organizing, education, advocacy, and demonstration projects. The Center is also the parent organization of Recycle Ann Arbor.
