SG-W:/ Farm Preservation Workshops

Five workshops "The Legacy Series" will be held in Michigan this month to
educate local leaders about ways to protect farmland and foster smart
growth by establishing urban growth boundaries, and agricultural districts.
At each, speakers include Susan Craft, director of planning in Burlington
Co. NJ (the most successful farmland preservation program in NJ); Tom
Daniels (implemented farmland preservation in Lancaster Co, PA);  June
Mengels, director of Lancaster County Agricultural Preservation program
(has protected 15,000 acres of farmland); and Rich Harlow, director of
Michigan's farmland preservation program.  Locations and times are: Adrian,
MI  Feb 22-23 (Christian Family Center Auditorium, 1800 W. US 223, Adrian,
MI 49221); Imlay City Feb 23-24; Kalamazoo Feb 26-27; Grand Rapids Feb
27-28; and Lansing Feb 28-March 1. Each includes an evening session 7-9pm
about various strategies used successfully to protect farmland and
accomodate growth (effective Ag zoning; Michigan's PDR program; and
Township-based Transfer of Development Rights) followed by a morning
session, 8:30-noon, on how to implement such strategies in your local
