The Ecology Center, a regional environmental organization based in Ann Arbor, is hiring a communications director to oversee all aspects of its publications, media relations, and communications.
The Ecology Center is a regional nonprofit organization that works for a clean and just environment through grassroots organizing, education, advocacy, and demonstration projects. Founded in 1970, the Center has approximately 4,000 members and supporters, 10 staff persons, several part-time consultants and interns, and an 11-person Board of Directors. In recent years, the Center has led successful campaigns to close down Michigan's largest medical waste incinerators, improve the environmental performance of the auto industry, and save thousands of acres of precious natural areas. The Ecology Center is the parent organization of Recycle Ann Arbor, also a nonprofit organization, which operates the premier recycling program in the state of Michigan.
The Ecology Center's communications director will oversee all aspects of the organization's publications, media relations, and communications. This position is the first full-time communications staff hired by the Center. Its work will be closely tied to our advocacy campaigns and education projects.
The communications director will be responsible for overseeing production of From the Ground Up, the Center's bi-monthly newsletter, which is produced with a large number of volunteer, contract, and staff contributors. Working with the Center's program staff, (s)he will create and produce an annual report, periodic research papers, and other publications, as needed. The position will also be responsible for maintaining the Center's website - www.ecocenter.org. (S)he will develop independent articles and commentary for local, state, and national print and radio outlets.
The communications director will also coordinate the Ecology Center's media relations. (S)he will develop press releases, organize media events, prepare briefing materials, cultivate press contacts, and communicate the organization's positions and programs to the public. While most of the Ecology Center's campaigns and programs are focused in southeast Michigan, our press contacts may include local, state, and national media outlets, depending on the campaign. The communications director will assist the Ecology Center's community organizing efforts, and help develop campaign strategies.
In addition, the position has some shared organizational responsibilities and office duties. Ecology Center staff are organized as a unionized collective, and actively participate in organizational decision-making.
