DNR HOSTS PUBLIC MEETING ON PICKEREL LAKE ACCESS

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation
Bureau will host a public meeting Aug. 14 to present its plan for preserving
the boating access site at Pickerel Lake in the Pinckney State Recreation
Area.
The meeting will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Pinckney High School
auditorium. The school is located on Dexter-Pinckney Road, one half-mile
south of M-36 in Pinckney.
Pickerel Lake is regarded as one of the last remaining lakes in southern
Michigan where anglers can enjoy an "up north" fishing experience. The small
boating access site on the secluded 23-acre lake, which has been in use for
decades, has virtually disappeared through gradual erosion and today looks
more like a swimming beach.
"The boat launch has deteriorated to a degree where resource damage is
significant and needs immediate attention," said Sue Lothrop, DNR Parks and
Recreation Bureau Shiawassee District Supervisor. "The implementation of the
boat launch plan to be discussed will preserve access at Pickerel Lake,
while ensuring that other recreational users will be able to enjoy this
unique resource for years to come."
Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for the meeting should
contact Lothrop at 517-625-4643.
