SG-W:/ Your chance to help save Pickerel Lake

DNR PUBLIC MEETING ABOUT PICKEREL LAKE'S FUTURE

Tonight the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will present their
plan for Pickerel Lake AND will listen to your input. Many
environmentalists believe that the DNR's plan would devastate Pickerel
Lake and ruin the experience of its primary users. We need as many people
as possible to attend this meeting to offer their comments or to provide
silent support for preserving Pickerel Lake.

When: TUESDAY, AUG. 14TH, 7:00 TO 9:30 P.M.

Where: PINCKNEY HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM 10244 DEXTER-PINCKNEY ROAD
                                            (1/2 mile south of M36)

What's the DNR's Plan?

Pickerel Lake and its surrounding lakeshore is the most natural, least
developed of the lakes in the Pinckney Recreation Area. The fens and
other wetlands along its margins support a variety of aquatic plant life,
and the lake supports a variety of fish, including trout. This makes
Pickerel an ideal site for a "quiet recreation area" designation which
allows for canoeing, swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating. Such a
designation would provide visitors with a quieter experience than on the
many larger lakes where motorized boats and jet skis are allowed.

The DNR wants to "upgrade" the existing boat ramp in order to open the
lake to larger boats with more powerful motors as well as to jet skis.
The result would be an end to the quiet, natural experience for visitors.
Also, Pickerel's excellent water quality would be damaged by the oil and
gas pollution from motors and the runoff from the paved ramp.

THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO SHOW THE DNR THAT WE WANT TO MAINTAIN PICKEREL LAKE
FOR QUIET, LOW-IMPACT USE. PLEASE COME TO THE MEETING TO:

(1) Share your experiences and why we need to preserve the lake and its
surroundings, or offer silent support by your presence.

(2) Voice your support to prohibit the use of motors on the lake and large
boats that need to be driven to the water's edge by trailer.

(3) Support a moratorium on the DNR's plan so that there is time for
discussion to find a plan that's acceptable to Pickerel visitors.

If people come out to Tuesdays' public meeting in the "vacation days" of
August, the DNR won't be able to deny the fact that a broad cross-section
of Washtenaw County residents value Pickerel Lake. If you care about this
special place - one of the natural treasures of our community - this is
your chance to be heard and to make a difference.

Thanks,
