JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Policy Specialist

The Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) - a 22-year-old nonprofit coalition
of almost 60 local, regional, and statewide environmental and public health
organizations - is seeking to fill a Policy Specialist position.  The
successful candidate will have the ability to advance MEC's goals relating
to improving air and water quality and enforcing environmental laws.

Responsibilities

       Work with MEC staff and member groups and allies in the clean air
field to
develop and help implement advocacy strategies that include policy,
litigation, public education and communications components.

       Assist with research and communications strategies relating to
coal-fired
power plant emissions and permits and their public health and ecological
impacts and costs.

       Review the air permits of major facilities in the energy and
automobile
industries and prepare testimony and public comment.

       Support efforts to promote policies favorable to new automobile
technologies.

       Prepare reports, briefing memos and other documents.

       Represent MEC at meetings and events in and out of Michigan as
requested.

Qualifications

       Strong organizational, communications, research and analytical
skills.
       Ability to work independently and balance multiple projects.
       Applicants with technical degrees (science or engineering)
preferred.
       Experience working with public officials and their staffs.
