Development Director

The Ecology Center, a regional environmental organization based in 
Ann Arbor, is seeking a talented, motivated, and experienced 
Development Director to oversee the organization's fund development 

The Ecology Center is a regional nonprofit organization that works 
for a clean and just environment through grassroots organizing, 
education, advocacy, and demonstration projects. Founded in 1970, the 
Center has approximately 4,000 members and supporters, 10 staff 
persons, several part-time consultants and interns, and an 11-person 
Board of Directors.  In recent years, the Center has led successful 
campaigns to close down Michigan's largest medical waste 
incinerators, improve the environmental performance of the auto 
industry, and save thousands of acres of precious natural areas.  The 
Ecology Center is the parent organization of Recycle Ann Arbor, also 
a nonprofit organization, which operates the premier recycling 
program in the state of Michigan.

Job Responsibilities
The Development Director is responsible for all fund development 
programs of the organization, and will work with all staff and Board 
members to carry them out.

Specific duties include membership development, donor recruitment, 
fundraising events, foundation support, workplace giving, and 
outreach.  The Development Director will work with staff and Board to 
design and implement an effective strategy to increase the Ecology 
Center's membership.  S/he will develop prospect lists, write member 
renewal letters and direct mail appeals for new members, and will 
oversee the Center's donor database.  The position will also identify 
major donor prospects, request their support, and cultivate the 
support of current donors.

In addition, the Development Director is responsible for organizing 
the Ecology Center's annual EcoRide fundraiser, and may plan and 
organize other fundraising events.  S/he will identify, research, 
make initial contacts, and submit grant proposals to private 
foundations likely to support the Center.  S/he will be responsible 
for the development of informational and promotional materials for 
members, donors, and foundations.  In all aspects of the job, the 
Development Director will work closely with the Ecology Center's 
program and administrative staff, and the organization's Board of 

The position also has some shared organizational responsibilities and 
office duties.  Ecology Center staff are organized as a unionized 
collective, and actively participate in organizational 
decision-making.  This position offers a great opportunity for a 
creative person to do meaningful work for a terrific public interest 

o Experience as a professional fundraiser for a nonprofit 
organization, with background in management, public relations, and/or 
media relations.
o Strong writing and public speaking skills.
o Proven capacity to develop and successfully execute a fundraising 
plan, with experience in direct mail, donor recruitment, fundraising 
events and/or grantwriting.
o Creativity in designing and executing effective marketing programs.
o Strong interpersonal skills to build positive and lasting 
relationships with donors, foundation staff, and new members.
o Technical skills and attention to detail to oversee management of 
donor database.
o Ability to work effectively in a collaborative atmosphere.
o Commitment to service in the public interest.
o Familiarity with environmental issues.

Starting salary is $35,000 per year with an excellent benefits 
package.  This is a full-time position.  Hours are flexible.  We are 
willing to discuss alternative arrangements with the right candidate.
