April 2011 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day (4/29) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Sat, April 30! Disposing of medicines via flushing or throwing them in the trash poses environmental, safety and health hazards. Take advantage of this free, anonymous opportunity to rid your home of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. New Great Lakes Seaway Trail exhibit (4/28) On May 6th, the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Discovery Center in Sackets Harbor, NY, opens for the season with a special exhibit of New York’s Historic Military Maps from 1750 to 1820. Maps show New York, Canada, Pennsylvania, and the waterways people traveled to establish settlements in such places as Oswego and Youngstown. Chicago-area waterways safety zone (4/27) In today's federal register, the U.S. Coast Guard published a proposed "permanent safety zone" on 77 miles of Chicago-area navigable waterways. The safety zone is related to invasive species (such as Asian carp) countermeasure activities. Aquatic Sciences Chronicle (4/26) The latest issue of the Aquatic Sciences Chronicle, the newsletter of the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute and the University of Wisconsin Water Resources Institute, is now online. National Park Field Guides app (4/25) The National Park Field Guides App is an interactive field guide to the wildlife of 50 National Parks, including Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This free app helps you identify plants and animals, find/reserve campsites, and more. Earth Day 2011 (4/22) April 22nd is Earth Day! This year, Earth Day's theme is themed after A Billion Acts of Green: a people-powered campaign to generate a billion acts of environmental service and advocacy. Check out the website to find Earth Day events taking place in your area and in the Great Lakes region. Great Lakes Study developments posted (4/21) The International Upper Great Lakes Study recently posted updates online. The updates include highlights of a progress report submitted to the International Joint Commission, a presentation made to members of Congress and information about plans for gathering public input this summer. Discover Better Boating TV series (4/19) Starting April 23, New York boaters will have the opportunity to “Discover Better Boating” on YNN (Your News Now) television. Once a month, boating industry professionals will offer tips on such topics as preparing your boat, boating safety, the impact of ethanol fuel on your boat, and fuel efficiency. Climate Change Impacts on Great Lakes Fishes (4/18) On April 19, the Ohio State University Climate Change Webinar Series presents Climate Change Impacts on Great Lakes Fishes. The Great Lakes support numerous fishes of ecological, economic, and cultural importance. How will fish respond to projected changes in temperature and precipitation? Invasive mussels causing massive ecological changes in Great Lakes (4/15) The ongoing spread of non-native mussels in the Great Lakes has caused "massive, ecosystem-wide changes" throughout lakes Michigan and Huron, two of the planet's largest freshwater lakes, according to a new University of Michigan-led study. Lake Michigan research boat takes shape (4/13) Meet the RV Coregonus, a 60-foot research vessel being constructed to support expanded study and survey work of the Lake Michigan fishery. The new RV Coregonus will allow fisheries staff to continue the work done on the previous research ship for more than 70 years – the RV Barney Devine. Asian carp point map (4/12) Where have the bighead carp been spotted? The Nonindigenous Aquatic Species (NAS) information resource for the United States Geological Survey released this interesting point map highlighting bighead carp locations. Adopt-a-Beach spring kickoff (4/11) Adopt-a-Beach events are set to kick off this month! The Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach program has 10,000-plus participants in six Great Lakes states. New and returning volunteers are invited to help enhance beaches in the Great Lakes region. IAGLR early bird registration (4/8) The 54th International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) Conference on Great Lakes Research will be held May 31 - June 3 in Duluth, Minn. This year’s theme, Big Lakes – Big World, will present over 35 sessions on the current state of Great Lakes research. Early bird registration rates are available until Tues., April 19! Risk Science UNPLUGGED presents Gulf Oil (4/7) On April 14, join the University of Michigan Risk Science Center director Andrew Maynard in conversation with four leading experts on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. A year after the spill, what are the lessons that can be learned and applied for the future and for other areas, such as the Great Lakes region? Exploring our energy future (4/6) A forum entitled How Emerging Technologies are Impacting West Michigan’s Energy Future takes place tonight at Muskegon Community College in Muskegon, Mich., from 7-9pm. The forum will address new energy developments, policy issues and sociologial changes. NECIS action plan on invasive species (4/5) The National Environmental Coalition on Invasive Species (NECIS) has released "An Action Plan on Invasive Species, for President Obama and the 112th Congress" which outlines the policy changes needed to curb invasive species introduction and spread. GLIN April Site of the Month (4/4) GLIN's April Site of the Month is the Michigan Water Stewardship Program, a partnership of organizations that provide educational assistance to Michigan's residents to identify and reduce contamination risks to water and other natural resources.
