USACE seeking public comment on ANS control paper

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released for public comment the "Inventory of Available Controls for Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) of Concern - Chicago Area Waterway System," an interim product of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). Comments will be accepted through Feb. 17.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is alerting residents to an abundance of snowy owls, originating from the Arctic tundra, migrating south to winter in regions of the Great Lakes and Midwest plains this year. A report from the Chicago Tribune verifies an influx of snowy owls to the area.

NOAA study: Yellow perch quickly purge a harmful algal toxin

Great Lakes perch lovers will find good news in a new NOAA study that shows yellow perch efficiently eliminate a harmful algal toxin from their tissues. The findings suggest that unless the fish are caught during a toxic algal bloom, eating them will not likely expose people to unsafe levels of the toxin known as microcystin.

Reverse Effect

A new book presents ideas on how the complex challenges facing Chicago’s waterway system can be the revolutionary rebirth of its riverfront. Reverse Effect, by Jeanne Gang, is result of a yearlong collaboration between Studio Gang, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and students from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Corps releases assessment of cargo traffic on Chicago Area Waterway System

This week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released the Baseline Assessment of Cargo Traffic on the Chicago Area Waterways System (CAWS), an interim product of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). The report is available on the GLMRIS website.

GLRI Quality Technical Conference
