Register now for Great Lakes Day! (12/21) Registration is open for the 2013 Great Lakes Commission Semiannual Meeting and Great Lakes Day in Washington, D.C., Mar. 5-7, 2013. These events feature dialogue on Great Lakes priorities by regional leaders and members of Congress, including Obama appointees who play a critical role in shaping Great Lakes policies. Register early for reduced rates!
Great Lakes Shoreviewer (12/19) The Superior Watershed Partnership recently announced the Great Lakes Shoreviewer, a free imagery tool that provides over 1,400 miles of beautiful color photography for the entire Upper Peninsula shoreline. The Shoreviewer is available as a free smartphone app for the iPhone, and also can be accessed online.
State of the Great Lakes report (12/18) The Michigan Office of the Great Lakes recently released Michigan's annual State of the Great Lakes report for 2012. Michigan law requires the annual report, which provides a snapshot of issues throughout the Great Lakes basin and informs policy discussions about protecting and managing Michigan’s Great Lakes resources.
Scientists use satellite data to map invasive species in Great Lakes wetlands (12/17) Scientists created satellite maps of the U.S. coastline of all five Great Lakes. They combined these maps with field studies to create a map showing the locations of large stands of invasive phragmites that are within 6.2 miles of the water’s edge.
Vessel and Ports Assessment for Offshore Wind: A Great Lakes Perspective (12/14) The Great Lakes Wind Collaborative presents Vessel and Ports Assessment for Offshore Wind: A Great Lakes Perspective on Dec. 17. This webinar features two speakers who will present on the results of two Department of Energy-funded national studies with a focus on the Great Lakes.
23rd Annual NO-SPILLS Conference (12/13) The NO-Spills Conference is Jan. 7-9 in Traverse City, Mich. This year's conference focuses on sustainability topics affecting the Great Lakes. Presenters will tackle issues including environmental emergency response, homeland security, pollution prevention and the re-emergence of mining in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Climate and Carbon Impacts on Productivity, Chemistry, and Invasive Species in the Great Lakes (12/12) The Ohio State University Climate Change Outreach Team will present “Climate and Carbon Impacts on Productivity, Chemistry, and Invasive Species in the Great Lakes” on Jan. 17 as part of their ongoing series of free webinars on issues related to climate change. Advance registration is required.
My Green Apps (12/11) The U.S. EPA website My Green Apps features more than 100 smartphone apps to help people understand and protect the environment. In addition to finding apps, you can also tell the EPA what apps you’d like someone to make and suggest an existing app that could be added to the site.
Michigan Sea Grant begins integrated assessment on Michigan’s aquaculture industry (12/10) Even with the state’s tremendous water resources, Michigan’s aquaculture growth has not followed global trends. An industry-wide assessment is underway to move Michigan’s aquaculture forward to satisfy consumer demands for safe and sustainable seafood.

EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative projects (12/5) Under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), EPA has funded approximately 500 grant awards totaling $268 million and has invested $118 million in the direct implementation of Great Lakes Legacy Act projects through Nov. 15, 2012. Visit the revised GLRI web site to see a comprehensive listing of EPA's GLRI activities funded through grants or in furtherance of the Great Lakes Legacy Act thus far.
GLIN December Site of the Month (12/4) GLIN's December site of the month is the Great Lakes Phragmites Collaborative, a regional partnership established to improve communication and collaboration and lead to more coordinated, efficient and strategic approaches to Phragmites management, restoration and research across the Great Lakes basin.
