Webinar: Stormwater Management and Clean Marina Best Practices

Marinas, boaters, and other stakeholders are invited to learn about best management practices for managing stormwater during the Clean Marina Webinar on March 12. This is the fourth webinar in a series led by Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs as part of the Green Marina Education and Outreach project, an effort to support Clean Marina programs in the Great Lakes region.

These events feature dialogue on Great Lakes priorities by regional leaders and members of Congress, including Obama appointees who play a critical role in shaping Great Lakes policies.

Asian carp environmental DNA study findings

On Feb. 20, the The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological Survey released an interim report for the Asian Carp Environmental DNA Calibration Study (ECALS), which is a three-year study funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Stop aquatic hitchhikers: Michigan boater survey

As part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) project “Mapping cumulative risks to prioritize prevention effort,” all registered boat owners in Michigan and Toledo Harbor, Ohio, are invited to complete a short survey related to boating activities. The survey's purpose is to improve understanding of boater movement between boat launches, marinas, harbors, and ports to better prevent transfer of invasive species.

Presque Isle Bay removed from Area of Concern List

Last week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that Presque Isle Bay, on the Pennsylvania shore of Lake Erie, has been removed from the list of heavily contaminated Great Lakes sites targeted for cleanup by the U.S.-Canada Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

IISG Summer student internship program

Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant is now accepting applications for its 2013 Summer Student Internship Program. Successful applicants will spend 12 weeks working closely with a Sea Grant specialist on issues affecting the Great Lakes. Internships include research, communications and outreach components.

Maritime Administration study finds Great Lakes shipping showing signs of recovery

Overall U.S. maritime cargo volumes in the Great Lakes region are recovering from extreme lows experienced in 2009, according to a report released this week by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration. The report finds that the U.S. Great Lakes maritime industry is generally healthy, providing efficient, safe and environmentally friendly transportation services.

Green Marina program releases Best Management Practices Guide for Marinas

Cruising the Great Lakes

The history of Great Lakes cruise ships began in the mid-19th century, when "palace steamers" carried passengers along the Great Lakes coast. Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant celebrates 30 years

Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and 30 years of working to protect and preserve the beauty and resources of Lake Michigan. To commemorate the event, a new publication features 30 milestone achievements of the organization, selected from the last three decades.

Reefs and Wrecks: Multidisciplinary Research at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

On Feb. 12, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary will broadcast a free webinar about research activities at the sanctuary. Topics include reef restoration, lakebed mapping, submerged sinkholes and archaeological projects.

Great Lakes water level changes

A short video was made by The Nature Conservancy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to promote climate change adaptation in the Great Lakes by highlighting the climate related issue of water levels. The film promotes the use of climate tools and data to make the Great Lakes basin more resilient in the face of a changing climate.

GLIN February Site of the Month

The GLIN February Site of the Month is the Great Lakes Environmental Assessment and Mapping (GLEAM) Project. GLEAM builds tools to integrate spatial information for environmental management decisions in the Great Lakes, such as their new environmental threat map that highlights Great Lakes restoration challenges.
