Restoring the Natural Divide (1/31) The Great Lakes Commission and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, with support from six funders, embarked on a project in July 2010 to identify engineering options for Chicago's waterway system that will prevent interbasin movement of aquatic invasive species, including Asian carp. The expedited study, now completed, also examines potential improvements to the waterway's roles in commercial navigation, recreational boating, flood and stormwater management, and water quality.

2012 Great Lakes Commission-Sea Grant Fellowship (1/24) The Great Lakes Commission-Sea Grant Fellow works with members of the Great Lakes' science, policy and information/education communities to advance the environmental quality and sustainable economic development goals of the Great Lakes states. The application deadline is Jan. 31, 2012.
Coast Guard cutters open to public (1/20) Now's your chance to hop on board one of three U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker ships that's welcoming visitors this weekend in downtown Detroit. The Coast Guard is offering free tours of the ships this Sat., Jan. 21, from 10 A.M. to noon, and again from 2 to 4 P.M.

Air lubrication a possibility for Great Lakes ships (1/13) An idea is bubbling in the Great Lakes shipping industry, one that could increase fuel efficiency by 5 percent to 20 percent. Naval engineers believe injecting air under the bottom of a ship reduces friction, helping them travel faster on less fuel.
Grant award for innovative technology may help native fish in Grand Traverse Bay (1/12) After decades of fewer native fish in Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay, important species like lake trout, whitefish, and lake herring may have a fighting chance to increase their numbers, thanks to a recently awarded U.S. EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant.

Lake Michigan Water Trail (1/9) An inventory of the 450-mile Lake Michigan Water Trail in Wisconsin was recently completed. The inventory covers Wisconsin's diverse Lake Michigan shoreline from the Michigan border in Marinette to the Illinois border south of Kenosha. A full report and maps are available for download.
GLIN January Site of the Month (1/3) GLIN's January Site of the Month is AsianCarp.us, the website of the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee. The Committe aims to protect and maintain the integrity and safety of the Great Lakes ecosystem from an Asian carp invasion via all viable pathways.
