Great Lakes Bowl (1/31) The 2013 National Ocean Sciences Bowl Great Lakes regional competition will be held Feb. 9 in Ann Arbor, Mich. High school students from the Great Lakes region will be competing for a spot at the national competition, which will follow the theme: The Great Lakes: A Window into Freshwater Science.
EPA's Stormater Pollution Prevention Webinar Series (1/30) On Jan. 31, the second in EPA’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Webinar Series will cover the topic of road salt, the application of which can lead to water quality problems for surrounding areas. The webinar will present information on the impacts of road salt on the environment and human health and successful reduction strategies used by states.
2013 Great Lakes Commission-Sea Grant Fellowship (1/29) The application period for the 2013 Great Lakes Commission - Sea Grant Fellowship closes on Feb. 1! The fellow works with members of the Great Lakes' science, policy and information/education communities to advance the environmental quality and sustainable economic development goals of the Great Lakes states.
Federal Advisory Committee Draft Climate Assessment Report (1/28) A 60-person federal advisory committee (the National Climate Assessment and Development Advisory Committee) has overseen the development of a draft climate assessment report. The draft report is available online for review and comment. Comments will be accepted until April 12, 2013.
Webinar: Multiscale Phragmites Mapping and its Applications (1/25) Register now for "Multiscale Phragmites Mapping and its Applications," a webinar taking place on Feb. 6. This webinar will provide an overview of why mapping Phragmites is important, the value of different scales of analysis or focus and the types of data people should think about.
Satellite imagery of lake-effect clouds and snow (1/24) The northern Midwest and east coast are currently under a massive cold snap. Near the Great Lakes, temperatures near 0 degrees F have been recorded for days. A spectacular image by NASA's Earth-observing Aqua satellite shows the effect of the cold air over the relatively warm lakes.
ANS Controls Screening (1/23) USACE screened the ANS Controls identified in the Inventory of Available Controls for Aquatic Nuisance Species of Concern - Chicago Area Waterway System (ANS Control Paper) and removed certain controls from further consideration by the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). Comments are being accepted until Feb. 21, 2013.
Boundary Waters Treaty webinar (1/22) On Wed. Jan. 23, the Consulate General of Canada in Chicago, in partnership with the International Joint Commission and the Alliance for the Great Lakes, presents a webinar examining binational efforts of Canada and the United States in restoring and protecting the Great Lakes through the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA).

Map of Sea Grant State Program Funding Opportunities (1/17) An interactive map of all Sea Grant funding opportunities for 2014 research projects is currently available on the National Sea Grant website. Users can click on the dots on the map for links to more information on state opportunities, along with pre-proposal and proposal deadlines.
Pure Michigan: Ice fishing (1/16) A new video by Pure Michigan invites you to find out what's so great about ice fishing! During the winter, the Great Lakes along with more than 11,000 inland lakes and hundreds of rivers and streams in Michigan provide anglers with the perfect location to ice fish for bluegill, perch, pike and walleye.
Great Lakes Now Connect: Invasive Species (1/15) Earlier today, “Great Lakes Now Connect: Invasive Species” brought together leading experts from across the Great Lakes region to discuss solutions to the threats posed by invasive species in the Great Lakes. Hosted by Detroit Public Television and The Nature Conservancy, the video will be available within 24 hours to watch-on-demand online.
Winter is a great time to begin planning shoreline projects (1/15) If you live on one of Michigan’s more than 11,000 inland lakes, winter is the perfect time to consider options to encourage healthy lake ecosystems through the implementation of alternative landscape technologies that utilize native plants at the shoreline.
PBS report on aging sewer systems (1/11) The U.S. is facing a huge, unseen challenge. Under streets, the pipes that carry fresh water are crumbling with age. At the same time, the pipes that carry sewage are also in poor condition. PBS recently aired an in-depth look inside Detroit's regional water system as one example of the problems at hand.
OSU Climate Change Webinar Series (1/10) The Ohio State University Climate Change Webinar Series presents its next webinar, "Climate and Carbon Impacts on Productivity, Chemistry, and Invasive Species in the Great Lakes" on Thurs. Jan. 17. The webinar is free, but pre-registration is required.
6th Binational Lake St. Clair Conference: Proceedings available (1/9) The 6th binational conference for Lake St. Clair convened over 140 participants last November to build partnerships, strengthen collaboration and advance the environmental and economic health of Lake St. Clair. The proceedings website includes all conference materials and over 30 presentations.
USDA toolkit for invasive species projects (1/8) A new workbook from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) contains basic information on USDA programs that could be used to fund and support projects related to invasive species. The workbook is intended as a helpful place to start a search for sources of technical and financial resources for invasive species activities.

GLIN January Site of the Month (1/4) GLIN's January Site of the Month is Save The River. Save The River was formed in 1978 to protect and preserve the ecological integrity of the Upper St. Lawrence River through advocacy, education, and research. Save The River is a grassroots advocate, working with thousands of year-round and seasonal members on both the U.S. and Canadian sides of the river.
