NOAA Great Lakes researchers join U.S.-Canadian study of Lake Huron ecosystem

Visitors to Lake Huron this summer may have a unique opportunity to glimpse science in action. During July and September, scientists on board a half dozen research vessels will crisscross Thunder Bay, Saginaw Bay, and the open waters of Lake Huron, collecting samples of sediment, water, mussels, microscopic organisms, and fish.

GLMRIS releases Subsistence Fishing and Pro-Fishing Reports

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released two reports last week, "Treaty Rights and Subsistence Fishing in the U.S. Waters of the Great Lakes, Upper Mississippi River and Ohio River Basins" (Subsistence Fishing Report) and "Pro-Fishing Tournaments in the Great Lakes, Upper Mississippi River and Ohio River Basins" (Pro-Fishing Report). These reports are Interim Products of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS).

Great Lakes Study hearings begin this week

The International Joint Commission (IJC) begins public hearings this week on the final results of International Upper Great Lakes Study on water levels, regulation and restoration options. Your participation in these hearings, and/or a comment period that runs until Aug. 31, is encouraged.

New NOAA/GLERL Great Lakes depth/currents maps

New online maps are available that present a visual representation of the flow patterns of Lake Michigan currents. The maps are based on simulations from the Great Lakes Coastal Forecasting System operated by NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL).

New website for Minnesota’s Park Point beachgoers

From now through October, potential beachgoers can access ParkPointBeach.org, a public service website designed to deliver information about current air, water, and safety conditions along Minnesota’s busiest Lake Superior beach, a 7-mile sandbar within the City of Duluth also known as Minnesota Point.

In honor of Lake Superior Day on July 15th, GLIN's July Site of the Month is the Lake Superior Binational Forum, composed of twelve Canadian and twelve American stake-holders focused on the entire ecosystem of Lake Superior: its air, land, water, human life and wildlife.
