National Fish, Wildlife and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy (3/29) In partnership with state and tribal agencies, the Obama Administration recently released the first nationwide strategy to help public and private decision-makers address the impacts that climate change is having on natural resources and their dependent people and economies.
Interactive water levels map: add your photos (3/27) The Detroit Free Press created an interactive map featuring the opinions of residents on the impact of low water levels across the state of Michigan, including local photos. You can help! Add your thoughts and share your photos on the map to help paint a broad picture of the water levels and their impact.

Illustrating the aesthetic impacts of offshore wind turbines in Lake Erie (3/25) In Ohio, residents are hotly debating whether wind energy facilities should be located off the Lake Erie shore. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Office of Coastal Management created visualizations of a theoretical wind farm using Lake Erie photos taken from various vantage points along the Cleveland lakefront.
World Water Day (3/22) It's World Water Day! In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 to be the "World Day for Water" as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This year's theme is Water Cooperation.
Great Lakes icebreakers (3/21) Icebreaking is a crucial part of keeping commerce operating on the Great Lakes, and it's particularly key for the steel industry. In 2011, U.S. flagged freighters moved nearly 20 percent of iron ore's total annual shipped tonnage between Dec. 16 and Apr. 15, designated as the "icebreaking season."
Climate change leading to more snow? (3/20) What impact is climate change having on the Great Lakes region? One impact may be increased lake-effect snow, according to "Sensitivity of Lake-effect Snowfall to Lake Ice Cover and Temperature in the Great Lakes Region," a recent paper authored by a University of Michigan doctoral student in the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences program.
New water quality test may prevent unnecessary beach closures (3/19) A new rapid water quality test may prevent beaches from being closed by providing accurate same day results of bacteria levels, according to a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Draft adaptive management plan for extreme Great Lakes water levels (3/18) A draft adaptive management plan for extreme Great Lakes water levels is now available online and for public review. The plan was prepard by the International Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Adaptive Management Task Team. The review period ends on April 15. A series of webinars are also planned to provide more information.
Great Lakes boating (3/15) The cover story in the latest issue of Boat U.S. magazine is "Cruising the Great Lakes." The issue features a special section on recreational boating in the Great Lakes, including an article on how to have a front row seat (in your boat slip) for the 200th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Lake Erie.
EPA announces Great Lakes Advisory Board (3/14) This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on behalf of 16 federal agencies the membership of the first advisory board to support implementation of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The Great Lakes Advisory Board will provide advice and recommendations to the EPA Administrator, who serves as chair of the federal Interagency Task Force.
How much plastic is in the Great Lakes? (3/13) Researchers are sounding a warning about plastic debris in the Great Lakes after visiting Lake Superior, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie, dipping nets to collect debris, and picking up surprising quantities of surface garbage.
On-demand water information (3/12) The U.S. Geological Survey’s WaterNow service can send users up-to-date water information via text or e-mail. Users can visit the service’s mapper and find a water gauge located in their area. From there, they send that gauge’s site number to the service by text or e-mail and the service responds with up-to-date data within minutes.
Lake Carriers' Association (3/11) Founded in 1880, Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) represents U.S.-flag vessel operators on the Great Lakes. Check out LCA's recently redesigned website, which serves as an online gateway to LCA's member companies and highlights issues of importance to the Great Lakes maritime industry.

Michigan Sea Grant leads new dangerous currents water safety project (3/7) Michigan Sea Grant will receive $75,000 to lead a new public outreach project focused on reducing the risk of drowning from dangerous currents. A main goal of the project is to increase understanding about dangerous currents among state and local park staff, beachgoers, community leaders and educators.
Great Lakes Day in Washington, D.C. (3/6) March 7, 2013 is Great Lakes Day: an annual event hosted by the Great Lakes Commission and the Northeast-Midwest Institute to convey a unified message to Congress expressing the Great Lakes region's priorities for legislation and appropriations to protect our environment and support our economy.
Great Lakes Boat Building School (3/5) The Great Lakes Boat Building School, located in the beautiful Les Cheneaux Islands of the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, offers a highly rated educational program designed to teach quality wooden boat building skills and preserve craftsmanship.
GLIN March Site of the Month (3/4) GLIN's March Site of the Month is the Council of the Great Lakes Region (CGLR). The CGLR is a new binational regional organization that will enhance regional collaboration and cross-border integration in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region. The CGLR will work to highlight and enhance the missions of existing regional organizations and support their projects.
