Great Lakes Week 2011

Great Lakes Week is almost here! Now is the time to finalize plans to attend. Great Lakes Week brings together representatives of the U.S. and Canadian governments, plus a broad coalition of public/private groups, to highlight efforts to implement solutions for the lakes' most pressing problems.

Cougar makes its way through Michigan

A cougar was caught by a trail camera on Sept. 26 in Houghton County, Mich., and a cougar was spotted by another trail camera in Ontonogan County earlier this month. These sightings, according to Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Adam Bump, are almost certainly of the same cat.

Great Lakes Week 2011

Detroit Public Television (DPTV) announced a high level of access to the public for Great Lakes Week, the upcoming Great Lakes summit in Detroit, Oct. 11-14, 2011. Streamed content will be available to viewers starting on October 11, 2011 at www.greatlakesnow.org.

2011 SOLM and GLBA Joint Conference webinars

The 2011 State of Lake Michigan and Great Lakes Beach Association Joint Conference takes place this week, Sept. 26-28. If you can't be there in person, consider tuning in online to one of the conference webinars. Several webinars require advance registration.

One of the world's newest sunflower species, discovered by a University of Wisconsin–Madison botanist, has carved out a very small but safe niche on an island in Lake Superior.

Great Lakes Water Quality Biennial Meeting

The International Joint Commission (IJC) announced that former Vice President, best-selling author and Nobel Prize co-recipient Al Gore will be the plenary keynote speaker at its Great Lakes Water Quality Biennial Meeting in Detroit, Mich., at 1:15 pm on Oct. 13. Seating is limited and registration is required.

Great Lakes Commission Annual Meeting

The Great Lakes Commission Annual Meeting is less than a month away. Registar now and plan to participate in the meeting as well as other Great Lakes Week 2011 events being held in Detroit, Mich., the week of Oct. 11-14.

GLFC unveils new eForum newsletter

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission recently unveiled the first edition of its new electronic newsletter, eForum. Available on the GLFC website, eForum contains articles related to the commission’s program, Great Lakes fishing and more.

German cruise ship visiting Duluth today

Duluth welcomes back the Columbus, a German owned and operated cruise ship, on its Great Lakes trip between Chicago and Toronto. Maritime fans can catch a view of the cruise ship in action at about 8 p.m. tonight (Sept. 14) when it heads out on its way back through the Great Lakes.

SOLEC 2011
