Why so many waterspouts in the Great Lakes? (9/28) There have been dozens of sightings of waterspouts on the Great Lakes over the past several weeks. While waterspouts are a common occurrence across the lakes this time of year, their frequency this year is unprecedented. So why has this year been so extraordinary?
Silent Spring echoes at MSU Museum (9/27) Fifty years after the publication of Rachel Carson’s famed Silent Spring, the Michigan State University Museum's new exhibit is taking a closer look at the book that many believe launched the environmental movement. The intention of the exhibit is to further explore the key issues the book raised in 1962.
Michigan Sea Grant Upwellings (9/26) The latest issue of Upwellings, the monthly newsletter of Michigan Sea Grant, is now available online. Upwellings has been reporting on Great Lakes research and education since 1976. This issue highlights Great Lakes literacy; specifically, understanding the influence of the Great Lakes on our lives.
West Michigan Underwater Preserve (9/25) The West Michigan Underwater Preserve, which covers about 345 square miles and features 13 identified shipwrecks and three other diving structures, became official last week. The Lake Michigan shipwrecks off Muskegon, Whitehall, Grand Haven, Pentwater and other points along the West Michigan shoreline are being protected and promoted as Michigan’s 13th underwater preserve.
Artprize (9/24) Voting for Artprize, a yearly open art competition based in Grand Rapids, Mich., is underway! ArtPrize has become the world’s largest art competition by combining $560,000 in total prizes with an open call for artists, venues, and critics. Best management practices guide for marinas (9/21) Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs have worked together to develop a new Great Lakes Clean Marina Best Management Practices Guide. The guide helps marinas and boaters reduce or eliminate pollution from entering the Great Lakes through a series of best management practices.
5th National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day (9/20) Walgreens is teaming with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and local police departments to provide communities with an opportunity to safely dispose of unused or expired medications, which helps keep them out of our waterways. The 5th National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day happens on Sat., Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
2012 Wisconsin Great Lakes Chronicle (9/19) The 2012 Wisconsin Great Lakes Chronicle is now available online. The Chronicle, now in its 11th year, is a yearly publication produced by the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program. The Chronicle promotes public awareness of Wisconsin's Great Lakes issues, and creates a historical record of Great Lakes events and perspectives.
Aquatic Pathways Assessment Summary Report (9/18) Last Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released for public comment the Focus Area 2 Aquatic Pathways Assessment Summary Report. This report presents the methodology and key evidence used to assess the potential for transfer of aquatic nuisance species (ANS) between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins through several aquatic pathways.
Surfing the Great Lakes (9/17) Lake Michigan is the most popular of the Great Lakes for catching waves, but surfers enjoy all the lakes. Some of the best spots for surfing around Michigan include Ursula's Break in St. Joseph, the Rock Pile in Grand Haven and the Zoo in Marquette.
Great Lakes Water Level Dashboard (9/14) The Great Lakes Water Level Dashboard is a new tool for examining changes in water levels in the Great Lakes. On Mon. Sept. 17, a webinar will be held to introduce the tool. Registration is required; click here to visit the webinar registration page.

Great Lakes Week starts today! (9/10) Great Lakes Week 2012 starts today! This year's gathering takes place in Cleveland, Ohio. Events kick off with the Great Lakes Commission Annual Meeting on Monday and Tuesday.
Signing of Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 2012 (9/7) The U.S. and Canada will sign a revised Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement this Friday, Sept. 7 at 2:00 pm Eastern. The ceremony will be streamed live at binational.net/webcast/. Tune in to witness this historic event!
New York Sea Grant Currents (9/6) The late summer edition of New York Sea Grant (NYSG) Currents, a newsletter featuring news and updates about recent NYSG projects and events, is now available online. This edition highlights NYSG resources on rip currents, hurricanes, and other severe storms.
Register now for the Great Lakes Commission Annual Meeting (9/5) The 2012 Great Lakes Commission Annual Meeting will again be held in conjunction with Great Lakes Week, featuring the annual meetings and conferences of diverse groups who are leading the fight to restore the Great Lakes. Be sure to submit your online registration by 12:00 pm (noon) ET on Friday, Sept. 7.
