Lake Erie, how much draw is too much?
-------------------------------------------------
Ohio lawmakers are taking their first look at competing bills to govern how
much water regional businesses can take from Lake Erie and under what
conditions. But environmentalists are concerned that the limits, which are
higher than any other Great Lakes state, are too high. Source: WKSU Public

In a globalized world, are invasive species a thing of the past?
-------------------------------------------------
Some conservation biologists argue that in a world where climate change,
human population growth and globalization have fractured the environment and
scattered so many species, the division between native and non-native seems
more and more artificial. Source: TIME Magazine (6/14)

Seaway numbers strong
-------------------------------------------------
The St. Lawrence Seaway has reported a strong start to the 2011 shipping
season. Generally viewed as a bellwether for the regional economy, initial

Studies at odds over Great Lakes levels
-------------------------------------------------
Two new studies have thrown everything we thought we knew about the missing

environmental conundrums, ordinary citizens are left wondering which
computer model to believe. Source: The Montreal Gazette (6/14)

Fish kill at central Mich. lake caused by virus
-------------------------------------------------
A recent fish kill at a central Michigan lake was caused by a virus
responsible for another kill at the lake four years ago, Michigan
environmental officials said Tuesday. Test results indicated that largemouth
and smallmouth bass were positive for viral hemorrhagic septicemia, or VHS.

Private donors help pay for more 'Pure Michigan' ads
-------------------------------------------------
The "Pure Michigan" tourism campaign has an extra $3 million to air radio
and TV ads in other states, thanks to contributions from 28 local convention
bureaus and tourist favorites. That's double the private contributions in
2009, and will allow a 15% increase in the cable TV ad campaign in other
states. Source: Detroit Free Press (6/14)

Bid to repair Lake Michigan and Great Lakes, one marsh at a time
-------------------------------------------------
A $2 billion restoration effort may help rehabilitate Lake Michigan and the
other Great Lakes, but environmentalists say it may be too late to reverse
four centuries' worth of damage. Source: The Christian Science Monitor

COMMENTARY: Implement phosphorus rules
-------------------------------------------------
The sooner we implement the phosphorus rules, the sooner we'll start seeing
reductions in algae blooms that scare away tourists, clog water intake pipes
and prevent us all from getting out there and enjoying Wisconsin's clean
waters. Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (6/13)
