We know from experience how bad an invasive species can be. Sea lamprey devastated the Great Lakes fishery in the 1940s and 50s, and they still kill a lot of fish. Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and other agencies have teamed up to draft a response plan. For the biggest vessels - the "thousand- footers" - one inch of draft corresponds to 267 tons of cargo. The trip is the next step in an effort to provide clean drinking water to hundreds of school children and their families. The cause is a region-wide dredging backlog, and shippers worry that sediment buildup threatens to choke some navigation channels.
