U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that Case Western Reserve University, Freshwater Wind, and Nautica Windpower have been awarded new federal resources to research advanced wind turbine systems to spur the development of clean energy technology. The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy program will finance new offshore wind power R&D projects. The new resources are expected to help spur new technological innovations, reduce costs, and improve efficiency in creating new offshore wind energy systems. "Ohio is at the forefront of clean energy technology development, and we can make Northeast Ohio a hub for offshore wind, research, and manufacturing. Offshore wind has the potential to bring thousands of good-paying jobs to our state and a clean, renewable source of energy to northeast Ohio homes and businesses," Brown said. "This federal investment from the U.S. Department of Energy will provide a key boost to CWRU, Freshwater Wind, and Nautica Windpower to continue the critical research and development that will bring wind turbines to Lake Erie." Brown has been a longtime advocate of offshore wind energy. Yesterday, he successfully amended language in a Senate Energy and Water Appropriations bill to include increased funding-$80 million-for offshore wind energy projects. Also as a result of Brown's efforts, shallow water projects, like those in Lake Erie, would be eligible for the funds. In July 2010, Brown urged the Obama administration <http://brown.senate.gov/newsroom/press_releases/release/?id=1dd31b69-a8e8-4f74-abba-e0fb9a5346fb> to strongly consider establishing the country's first demonstration wind project in Ohio. In July 2011, Brown introduced bipartisan legislation <http://brown.senate.gov/newsroom/press_releases/release/?id=a3d531bc-fa7e-48b2-9421-1813d474b5c8> , the Incentivizing Offshore Wind Power Act, to encourage offshore wind energy production through investment tax credits. In the same month, he hosted an offshore wind industry and supply chain roundtable with key business leaders in Cleveland at NorTech. A breakdown of the funding is below. AWARDEE LOCATION AMOUNT PROJECT DESCRIPTION Case Western Reserve University Cleveland, OH $540,000 This project will evaluate potential impacts of offshore wind on the electric grid in the Great Lakes region and determine requirements on interconnection points, control systems, and the application of system reinforcements for different transmission system characteristics. Freshwater Wind LLC Cleveland, OH $500,000 This project will develop a computational model to study how existing wind turbine systems could be optimized for shallow water conditions found in the Great Lakes. Nautica Windpower LLC Olmsted Falls, OH $500,000 This project will develop a conceptual design for a deep water offshore wind farm using lightweight floating platforms with improved access for maintenance. ### ____________________________ Laura E.
