Great Lakes harbor cleanups planned

The Obama administration will target nine polluted harbors for accelerated 
cleanups under a program to heal the ailing Great Lakes, Environmental

EPA chief: River Raisin headed toward removal of Area of Concern designation

Initiative - including the pending removal of the River Raisin region as an

Report: Mercury levels mostly down in Great Lakes

Concentrations of mercury exceed the risk threshold for people and wildlife 
at many spots across the Great Lakes region, and are particularly high in 
inland waterways, said a report issued by the Great Lakes Commission, an 
agency that represents the eight states and two Canadian provinces

Toxic algae bloom rages in Lake Erie

The costly toxic algae bloom in Lake Erie this year was the worst in nearly 
50 years, several scientists said today. Toxic blooms are capable of making 
people ill and can kill pets. They're also smelly, cover beaches and are

Calumet Prairie, Ivanhoe South win restoration work

$867,775 for ecosystem restoration for the Calumet Prairie and Ivanhoe South

A 300-ton replica of a U.S. warship victorious in the 1813 Battle of Lake 
Erie is getting a checkup and some fine tuning at a northeastern Ohio

Great Lakes gathering draws many players, star power

The Great Lakes Commission, the International Joint Commission and a 
coalition of Great Lakes conservation groups are simultaneously holding 
meetings in Detroit this week, drawing in policy-makers, scientists and 
advocates from across the region. And some star power. Al Gore is expected 
to give the keynote address at the IJC's biennial meeting Thursday. Source:

Wind project threatens birds, green group warns

An internationally recognized "Important Bird Area" is being threatened by 
an Ontario wind power development, a Canadian conservation group alleges. 
Gilead Power Corporation hopes to build a nine-turbine wind farm on the 
south shore of Prince Edward County, a huge peninsula that juts into eastern
