House says states can't regulate ballast

New York's strict new standards for keeping invasive species out of ships' 
ballast on the St. Lawrence Seaway took a hit in Congress, and probably won't 
get a second chance on Capitol Hill, a congressional source said Monday.

Moving Nipigon's Kama creek may bring back fish

Decades ago, Nipigon, Ontario's Kama Creek was realigned to protect a 
railway crossing from erosion. But the move destroyed brook trout spawning 
grounds and created a barrier to migration up the creek. Now, the creek is

GVSU wind buoy performing well on Lake Michigan after rough-water weekend

assessment buoy a challenging welcome.
The eight-ton, 10-by-20-foot floating research platform was towed out Friday

State leaders discuss Lake St. Clair muck

Michigan state officials determined that the "muck" building up along the 
Lake St. Clair shoreline is comprised of  bluegreen algae, which may be 
exacerbated in Lake St. Clair due to zebra mussels, storm water runoff and

Removing dam might help Lake Erie

Engineers say Ballville Dam, a 100-year-old structure on the Sandusky River 
near Fremont, Ohio, needs repairs totaling millions of dollars. A biologist 
has estimated that removal of the dam would expand walleye spawning beds in 
the Sandusky River to as much as 15 times what they are now. Source: The
