Source: Detroit Free Press (6/15) Carferry CEO stays optimistic about Lake Michigan Carferry, SS Badger ------------------------------------------------- Bob Manglitz entered the SS Badger's 2012 sailing season optimistic an improving state economy will translate into more passengers on the historic carferry. He's a bit worried, too, over Lake Michigan Carferry's application to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency concerning a permit to continue discharging coal ash from the last-coal-fired, steam-powered passenger ship in the country. And a well-crafted, laser-focused advisory board may help achieve its simplification goal. Let's hope it works. Source: Great Lakes Echo (6/15) Ohio nuclear plant restarts, finds no new cracks ------------------------------------------------- During the previous shutdown last fall, crews had found cracks in the outer concrete wall that's designed to protect the reactor. The company says the latest inspections indicated those cracks have not grown, and no new cracks were found. Source: Dayton Daily News (6/15) Asian carp could invade Northumberland Lake Ontario waters ------------------------------------------------- In the past two years, Canadian border officials have stopped six truckloads of Asian carp, with an average truckload of 6,000 lbs. Source: Nothumberland News (6/15) New cruise sets sail for shores of Lake Superior ------------------------------------------------- On Friday, May 18, the Isle Royale Queen III set on its maiden voyage for Marquette Harbor Cruises. According to owner Molly Carmody, the cruise runs seven days a week and will continue to operate daily until Oct. 14. Saturday.
