What is now called Stone Lab was operational in 1895 and continues its role as the hub of Ohio State's research and education on Lake Erie. It's also about naval history, marking the bicentennial of the War of 1812, which was largely fought over naval control of the Great Lakes as well as British interference with American shipping in the Atlantic Ocean. Paul Haley of the Lake Express high-speed ferry, Friday marks his 2,500th crossing between Milwaukee and Muskegon, Mich. At 81 miles a pop, that's more than 200,000 miles.
