Non-profit Executive Position



The Board of Trustees of the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy is seeking qualified candidates to fill the President and CEO position at the Conservancy.  Candidates should express their interest in leading the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy in the future by emailing their qualifications to wildlife at miwildlife.org by March 20.



The Michigan Wildlife Conservancy is a science-based, non-profit membership organization that restores and conserves fish, wildlife and habitat, and trains others to do the same.  Specifically:





  a.. The Conservancy provides technical and financial assistance on a wide variety of fish and wildlife habitat projects.  Recent examples include wetland restorations, trout stream restorations and sturgeon spawning reefs in the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers.


  a.. The Conservancy provides guidance to communities and organizations on wildlife and habitat issues.  Recent examples include controlling deer in nature preserves and metropolitan areas, and encouraging wetland restorations in conjunction with county drain projects.


  a.. The Conservancy provides advocacy and technical assistance on selected critical fish and wildlife and habitat issues.  Recent examples include supporting the DNR invasive species ban on Eurasian hogs to Michigan legislators, helping educate landowners on the problem, and working with U.S.D.A. Wildlife Services in eradicating the Eurasian hogs that have already escaped into the wild.


  a.. The Conservancy conducts in depth research on selected species like the cougar and Russian boar in Michigan


  a.. The Conservancy owns and manages a 10,000 square foot office and conference facility, called the Bengel Wildlife Center, located in Bath on 259 acres of woods and marsh land.  The building requires regular maintenance and repair work and the grounds and trails also require maintenance.


  a.. The Conservancy publishes The Wildlife Volunteer, a high-quality newsletter on wildlife and wildlife habitat topics every two months.


The Conservancy’s impact on Michigan’s wildlife legacy over the last 30 years has been profound.  Prospective candidates for the Executive Director position are invited to learn more about the conservancy at www.miwildlife.org.



Compensation requirements can be submitted with qualifications.  Actual compensation will be determined based on the qualifications of the individual selected. Employment terms (time, compensation, schedule, etc.) negotiable.





Qualifications of candidate:

A bachelor’s degree is required. A degree in business or a natural resources discipline or an MBA in non-profit organization management is desirable.

Experience with grantmaking, fundraising events, and development activities is essential.  Good oral and written communication skills and solid computer skills is important. Experience in data base management software is desirable, particularly data base software for nonprofit organizations (the MWC uses the Raisers Edge data base system).  Familiarity with fish, wildlife, habitat and/or forestry helpful.  Experience with non-profit board, working with volunteers and supervising employees all important; an ability and willingness to advocate firm positions on behalf of the organization is critical.

Employment terms (time, compensation, schedule, etc.) negotiable.  Final job responsibility and title commensurate with candidate’s qualifications.

Duties and functions:



Serve as the CEO of the organization at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees; lead a fund development effort including: grantmaking, events, annual memberships and major giving to support the Conservancy’s mission. Help Treasurer to prepare and follow annual budget;

hire and supervise a competent full and part-time staff, and consultants, to complete the work of the organization; oversee the production of a high quality bi-monthly newsletter; oversee the training/educational programs and the wildlife restoration projects of the organization;

be the chief spokesperson and liaison to the membership, press, public and political entities, conservation organizations and hunting and fishing groups, and advocate for the organization on behalf of wildlife and the public interest.
