Rick Snyder signs $20.9M bill to dredge Michigan harbors ------------------------------------------------- Michigan's boating season got a boost when Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill Wednesday pouring $20.9 million into an emergency dredging program. The money will allow 58 public bays and harbors, used mostly for recreational boating, to be dredged. Source: Detroit Free Press (3/28) Alcoa, Reynolds to pay $20M to clean up St. Lawrence ------------------------------------------------- Alcoa and Reynolds Metals will pay almost $20 million to restore habitat and wildlife on the St. Lawrence River near Massena, New York. The settlement ends a more than 20-year-old lawsuit spearheaded by the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. But environmental scientists working with the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge quietly celebrated the return of the bird after 50 years. Rick Snyder says a meeting of Great Lakes governors and premiers planned for later this year is "way overdue." Snyder in January joined Ill. Gov. Pat Quinn as co-chair of the Council of Great Lakes Governors. Source: The Associated Press (3/28) EPA survey shows most rivers, streams in U.S. in poor condition for aquatic life ------------------------------------------------- More than half of the nation's rivers and streams are in poor biological condition and are under "significant stress," a survey from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says. Ohio's major rivers are doing much better than the national average. Anglers armed with nets hoped to reel in the fish to find out how far they've spread. Every March, the St. Lawrence Seaway sends a crew out in the water with tug boats and a barge to restore the navigation buoys along the shipping channel.
