Gov. Rick Snyder signs $20.9M bill to dredge Michigan harbors

Michigan's boating season got a boost when Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill 
Wednesday pouring $20.9 million into an emergency dredging program. The 
money will allow 58 public bays and harbors, used mostly for recreational

Alcoa, Reynolds to pay $20M to clean up St. Lawrence

Alcoa and Reynolds Metals will pay almost $20 million to restore habitat and 
wildlife on the St. Lawrence River near Massena, New York. The settlement 
ends a more than 20-year-old lawsuit spearheaded by the St. Regis Mohawk

A tern for the better: The Detroit River comeback

Few people would get excited about two common tern chicks who hatched on 
Michigan's Belle Isle last summer. But environmental scientists working with 
the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge quietly celebrated the

Ship traffic good sign

Business should be good in 2013 on the Great Lakes, if early traffic through 
the Soo Locks is any indication. An armada of ships have locked through 
since the Paul R. Tregurtha was the first ship through early Monday on its

Mich. Gov. Snyder: Great Lakes meeting is overdue

planned for later this year is "way overdue." Snyder in January joined Ill.

EPA survey shows most rivers, streams in U.S. in poor condition for aquatic 
life

More than half of the nation's rivers and streams are in poor biological 
condition and are under "significant stress," a survey from the U.S. 
Environmental Protection Agency says. Ohio's major rivers are doing much

DNR searching for Asian carp near the Twin Cities

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources spent a morning hunting for 
Asian carp in the Mississippi River near South St. Paul. Anglers armed with 
nets hoped to reel in the fish to find out how far they've spread. Source:

Buoys being placed in St. Lawrence Seaway

A spring ritual is underway on the St. Lawrence River, marking the beginning 
of boating season. Every March, the St. Lawrence Seaway sends a crew out in 
the water with tug boats and a barge to restore the navigation buoys along
