EM:/ Michigan beaches among dirtiest in US

As several people have noted "Testing of beaches is done by local health
departments and is not required by law."

Chuck mentions,
"the health advisories are... in fact good since it means that our folks
are testing and providing the public with useful information."

However Great Lakes Blogger, Dave Dempsey, also raises an important point -
"It's not a scientific sample because there isn't enough data... Why
don't the Great Lakes states require by law regular testing at all major
public bathing beaches?"

This information represents a snapshot of the statewide problems with
sewage overflows, outdated septic systems, as well as agricultural and
stormwater runoff flowing directly into our waterways. With increasing
incidents of severe weather, more needs to be done now more than ever.
