Detroit Free Press Lake Superior toxin needs a global solution BY MELVIN J. VISSER AND DAVE DEMPSEY • August 2, 2009 A recent report co-authored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency represents a threat to, not a protection of, our health and environment. In "State of the Great Lakes 2009 Highlights," which was issued June 23, the EPA and Environment Canada claim that concentrations of persistent organic pollutants such as PCBs and the pesticides we banned in the 1970s and '80s continue to decrease. This is true only if the most toxic situation in the Great Lakes, Lake Superior's toxaphene pollution, is ignored.
